The Story of You And Me
Lyrics:
Funny how you can live in the same town as someone else From 1995 to 2012 And never cross paths Funny how I still remember it was February twenty-first The start of the worst Snowstorm we ever had You saw me walking home and you smiled You introduced yourself and we talked for a while Then you drove me home, in the raging snow I knew I would see you again This is the story of A boy and girl who fell in love After one talk, one drive One text string that lasted all night This is the story of The memories that make up us All the good and the bad and the happy and sad of our history It’s the story of you and me Funny how we discovered that your mom and my dad Had dated in high school but it went bad We swore that’d never be us But we were young and dumb and we let our insecurities get in the way I heard a new rumor every day I didn’t know who to trust Someone said they saw you with another girl I came storming up screaming “What in the world?” And your temper blew, and you turned and flew I thought for sure that was the end This is the story of A boy and girl who broke up After one hurt, one fight One moment left us crying all night This is the story of The memories that make up us All the good and the bad and the happy and sad of our history It’s the story of you and me It's the story of you and me After a couple months, we tried again But when we left for college we were only friends Four years away, going on other dates But my heart never felt like it was in the right place Until I came back home Funny how you can talk to someone so sporadically From 2013 to 2017 And never lose touch Funny how we met up and gained back all of our common ground Catching up and joking around We’d missed each other so much This is the story of A boy and girl who are so in love After one year, of dating You got down on your knee and pulled out a ring This is the story of The memories that make up us All the good and the bad and the happy and sad of our history It’s the story of you and me It's the story of you and me It’s the story of you and me You and me Funny how you can meet and connect with someone instantly Come to love unconditionally And that’s the story of you and me |

Lyrics by Kelsey Gallant (2012 & 2017) Melody by Kelsey Gallant (2012 & 2017) Music by Kelsey Gallant (2019 & 2020) Produced by Kelsey Gallant at Blobfish Studios The Story Behind The Song:
I came up with the first stanza in fall 2012. I'm pretty sure I was taking a walk around my neighborhood at that time, and the lyrics and melody just came to me. I really liked them, and I could see them turning into a great story song. I just didn't know where to go from there. I made occasional attempts over the next few years to complete the song, but didn't come up with anything I liked until one day in October of 2017. I don't remember whether I'd intentionally decided "I'm going to finish this song", or if I was just singing the lines I had and then continued on with them, but I do remember walking around in my backyard with my phone, making lots of voice memos as I developed the lyrics and tune for the rest of the song. This song has always reminded me of some of Taylor Swift's music (particularly the songs on her "Speak Now" album), which makes sense, because Taylor Swift was one of my earliest songwriting influences. (A funny note about the lyrics: I wrote the 2012 part in 2012 and the 2017 part in 2017, but that wasn't really intentional. I was just picking years that sounded good in the song and made sense given the context. Also, the specific years are one of my favorite aspects of the song because they give it a "real life" sort of feel.) My dad has been playing guitar since he was a teenager. The summer of 2019, I asked him to start teaching me. He taught me many of the songs he knew how to play, as well as some music theory and basic chords. I was eager to start coming up with music for my songs, so one night I started strumming some chords as I sang the beginning of "The Story of You and Me", and I really liked how it sounded! I realized that the same chord progression could carry out through the whole song, and for several months I just enjoyed singing the song straight through while constantly playing nothing but chords. Later, I used the notes in each chord to develop the music in the verses. Guitar lessons with my dad!
