what does "middle grade" mean?

Middle grade stories are generally targeted toward children between the ages of 8 and 12. The conflicts, events, and scenarios that occur in middle grade realistic fiction stories tend to be relatable for children within this age group, often focusing on themes such as friendship, school, family relationships, and new experiences. Often, the characters of middle grade stories are slightly older than the target audience—sometimes up to 14 or 15 years old. However, regardless of the age of the characters, middle grade stories are relatively clean in regard to content. You can think of a middle-grade story as analogous to a PG-rated movie. If there is violence, it is not incredibly graphic or gory. If there is romance, it is limited to a crush and maybe one or two sweet kisses. Middle grade stories may address heavier topics such as death, strained parent-child relationships, and bullying; however, they do so in an age-appropriate manner. Most middle-grade stories have, if not a “happy” ending, at least a positive, hopeful ending.

fanfiction

The term "fanfiction" refers to works of fiction written by fans of a certain book, movie, or TV show, using characters, locations, or objects specific to that book, movie, or TV show. Fanfiction works can be continuations of a story (for example, someone writing a Harry Potter 8), the same story written from a different character's perspective (like my Allisen's Notebooks e-shorts, if they had been written by someone other than me), or a completely different story that uses characters from a published work. Fanfiction stories cannot be officially published, because the author of a fanfiction story does not own the rights to those characters, settings, etc. However, fanfiction stories can be shared online with other fans via the website fanfiction.net.

I have currently written two complete Fanfiction stories for Margaret Peterson Haddix's series The Missing, and am in the process of writing a third. If you have read The Missing series and are interested in reading my Fanfiction works, click here to check them out. If you have not read The Missing series, I advise that you do not read my Fanfiction works at this point. They will most likely not make sense to you, and will spoil elements of the series for if you ever do decide to read it. (As a side note, I highly recommend the series to middle-grade readers (and teens) who are interested in time travel, events in history, suspenseful stories, stories about siblings, and/or books with twists!)
