what does "young adult" mean?
“Young Adult” is basically a fancy literary term for “teenagers”. Stories in the Young Adult category tend to contain heavier, more mature themes that reflect issues faced by adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Young Adult stories often delve deep into characters’ thoughts and emotions, and usually involve elements of identity forming and self-discovery. Young Adult stories are allowed to include swearing, sexual content, and /or graphic depictions of violence. Additionally, they may center on topics such as suicide, depression, or addiction, which would not be appropriate focus points for younger readers. However, Young Adult stories do not have to include any of these elements. A story about a character applying for college or getting a driver’s license would most likely be classified as Young Adult, because it revolves around a topic relevant to people in their upper teens. Main characters in Young Adult stories tend to be between the ages of 14 and 18, and not yet in college.

Fanfiction
The term "fanfiction" refers to works of fiction written by fans of a certain book, movie, or TV show, using characters, locations, or objects specific to that book, movie, or TV show. Fanfiction works can be continuations of a story (for example, someone writing a Harry Potter 8), the same story written from a different character's perspective (like my Allisen's Notebooks e-shorts, if they had been written by someone other than me), or a completely different story that uses characters from a published work. Fanfiction stories cannot be officially published, because the author of a fanfiction story does not own the rights to those characters, settings, etc. However, fanfiction stories can be shared online with other fans via websites like fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own.
I am currently in the process of writing a fanfiction story for Marissa Meyer's Renegades series. If you have read the series, and are interested in checking out my story "Subterfuge", you can find it on ArchiveOfOurOwn or FanFiction.net. If you haven't read the original series, I advise that you do not read my story yet, because it will spoil elements of the original works. However, if you're interested in action, adventure, mystery, superheroes, sweet romances, hidden identities, and/or stories where the lines between "good characters" and "bad characters" aren't black-and-white, I highly encourage that you read Marissa Meyer's series!
