Gold (Feat. Cam Gallant)
The version of "Gold" on my YouTube channel was mixed by Cam and me at home in spring 2020. The version available on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and Amazon was mixed by Cam and Giampaolo Pasquile in spring 2023. It's fun to listen to both versions and hear the similarities and differences!
Lyrics:
You hide in silence Wanna speak but so afraid What if they don’t like anything you say Hey-ey-ey So scared of their criticism Scared of messing up so you don’t try But you can’t get past the clouds if you’re scared of the sky So, throw out all your fears and your regrets Show the world that you’re not finished yet You're not finished yet Oh, you’re outstanding You oughta know See you go go go go go Oh oh, you are more Yeah you’re a champion Go show the world You’re gold, gold, gold, gold, gold Oh oh, oh oh You keep your distance Put a mask upon your face You think the real you’s just too hard to take Hey-ey-ey So scared you won’t be accepted You've made yourself invisible But if they don't see you then you’ll never know So, don’t be daunted by your faults and scars Get out there and show them who you are Show them who you are Oh, you’re outstanding You oughta know See you go go go go go Oh oh, you are more Yeah you’re a champion Go show the world You’re gold, gold, gold, gold, gold Oh oh, oh oh I’m gold and I’m bold and I never say can’t I strive toward my goals, I don’t leave ‘em to chance Don’t need perfection, I’ll face rejection But I’ll never accept it when they tell me I can’t I don’t care what the skeptics say Everybody willy-nilly, okay Used to say you couldn’t put a man in space I let courage be my guide, there’s a will, there’s a way Oh, you’re outstanding You oughta know See you go go go go go Oh oh, you are more Yeah you’re a champion Go show the world You’re gold, gold, gold, gold, gold Oh oh, oh oh Oh, you’re outstanding You oughta know See you go go go go go Oh oh, you are more Yeah you’re a champion Go show the world You’re gold, gold, gold, gold, gold Oh oh, oh oh |

Lyrics by Kelsey Gallant (contributor: Cam Gallant) Melody by Kelsey Gallant and Cam Gallant Music by Cam Gallant 2020: Produced by Cam Gallant 2023: Mixed by Cam Gallant and Giampaolo Pasquile The Story Behind The Song:
My brother Cam and I were talking about developing music for a song I'd written. Cam sat down at the piano, set up a synth sound, and started playing a random riff. It didn't at all match the song we were trying to come up with music for, but we both loved the sound of it! He played around with it for a while, adding more instruments and effects, and soon we had everything but the lyrics. We both took a couple tries on the microphone, coming up with sporadic lyrics but mostly just tunes for how the vocals would go. We ended up selecting one of my tunes for the verses, and one of his tunes for the chorus. Then I had to write lyrics that would fit into the tune we'd decided to use. This was harder than I'd thought it would be! I had already decided that I wanted the lyrics to be something uplifting, spreading a positive message, although I didn't necessarily know what I wanted that message to be. I tried a few things and didn't like what I came up with. Then I started browsing my documents of unfinished songs and songs without tunes, and I came across a completed tuneless song I'd written in 2013 called "Go For The Gold." I drew from those lyrics, shortening them and changing them to make them fit with our tune. We didn't have a third verse for the longest time. We knew we wanted it to be rap, but it took quite a while to come up with lyrics and a sound we both liked. Cam initially came up with a tune/rhythm for the rap that was much slower and less rappish than what we have now. I wrote a pretty lousy set of lyrics for that tune, Cam revised them into something passable, and then we decided we wanted the rap to have more energy. He came up with the rhythm of what we have now, with a few lyrics filled in, and then I wrote the rest of the lyrics around that. I love everything about this song, from the sound to the music to the message. But I think the coolest thing about it is how much of a collaboration it was. Cam created all the music, we both contributed to the tune, I wrote most of the lyrics with contributions from him, and he did most of the producing and mixing, with small contributions from me. We both have our own ideas and styles, and this song fuses them together in such a great way. This song would never have existed without both of our minds and talents working together. album cover photo credit: Neel Juvvanapudi
