Afraid

Lyrics:

Ooh ooh

Hey, hey, whatcha say, where you goin'
I sit here and wait, never knowing
Where you are, tell me why, tell me what’s up
Hey hey, hey-ey

Tryna run from the pain, it’s been a long time
Since the last time you shared what’s on your mind
Your world never was like mine
You grew up broken and the questions haunt me all the time

Like when you’re gonna come, and when you’re gonna go
And wondering if you’ll still be there tomorrow
Walls around your soul, and difficult to know
Determined to be on your own

Hey hey whatcha say, where you goin'
I sit here and wait, never knowing
Where you are, tell me why, why are you afraid
Afraid, afraid
Long ago we were close and I want that
Now I scroll through your posts, feeling so sad
You push me away and I don’t know why, why, why

I stare at the frame for a long time
Young you with a flame in your eyes
How did things go so awry
I reach out for you but you shut me out every time

You push away the warmth, to stand out in the cold
And tell me that you’ve got things under control
Always all alone, and running from your ghosts
I think you’re just afraid of hope

Hey, hey, whatcha say, where you goin'
I sit here and wait, never knowing
Where you are, tell me why, why are you afraid
Afraid, afraid
Long ago we were close and I want that
Now I scroll through your posts, feeling so sad
You push me away and I don’t know why, why, why

Hm, hm-mm, hm-mm, hm-mm-mm
Hm, hm-mm, hm-mm, hm-mm-mm-mm
Hm, hm-mm, hm-mm, hm-mm-mm-mm
Hm, hm-mm, hm-mm

I don’t wanna be afraid
Breaks my heart to watch you fade
I just wanna see your face
And know you’re okay
Self-inflicted chains
Things can always change
I refuse to walk away

Hey, hey, whatcha say, where you goin'
I sit here and wait, never knowing
Where you are, tell me why, tell me what’s up
Hey hey, hey-ey

Hey, hey, whatcha say, where you goin'
I sit here and wait, never knowing
Where you are, tell me why, why are you afraid
Afraid, afraid
Long ago we were close and I want that
Now I scroll through your posts, feeling so sad
You push me away and I don’t know why, why, why

The Story Behind The Song:

My brother Cam assembled this music track  and instructed me to sing to it. This is the way we build songs sometimes -- just by making random recordings and going from there. We call our original recordings "sketch tracks." Sketch tracks usually include a basic melody and a few sporadic lyrics that we later build the song around.

We both loved the tune I came up with when I made my sketch track for this song, so when I wrote the lyrics, I made sure to keep the melody as similar as possible. The sketch track had included the lyrics from the half chorus at the beginning of the song, and a few other words here and there, and from that I figured out what I wanted the song to be about. When I initially started writing, I was trying to decide what kind of relationship the singer and the person being sung to had -- friends? siblings? lovers? -- then decided I'd rather keep it vague so it could apply to any of those situations. I went slowly in writing the lyrics, adding a few lines each day for about six days, but I always really liked what I ended up with. Even though this song isn't about anyone from my own life, I love the story it tells and I imagine a lot of people will be able to identify with it.

Although sketch tracks are intended simply to generate ideas, and never end up becoming the final vocals, sometimes a small component of a sketch track sounds really good and is incredibly hard to duplicate. That's what happened with the "ooh ooh" at the beginning of this song -- I loved the way it sounded in the sketch, so I actually used the exact recording from the sketch for that one part of the real song!

Picture
My cat Magi's voice is featured at the very beginning of this song! You can't hear him with the music playing, so I didn't even notice until I listened to the vocals alone. I laughed when I heard his meow and decided to keep it!
