The Big (not so bad) breakup
Kim and Stivre dated for ten months—quite long for a middle-school relationship. While they were dating, people like Allisen, Jack, and Shevea found it uncomfortable to be around them, since they were always hugging and kissing and being romantic with each other. When they broke up, Allisen was shocked and wondered whether their friendship would survive. She was worried that Stivre wouldn’t be part of their group of friends anymore.
Fortunately, the way Kim and Stivre’s breakup worked out, they were able to remain friends with each other, and because of this, both Kim and Stivre remained part of the larger group. If you read the super special Kim, you know that their breakup was pretty mild—Kim was getting tired of having Stivre as her boyfriend, becoming annoyed with some of his personality traits and the way he was treating her. On the other side, Stivre was becoming interested in someone else, and didn’t really want to be Kim’s boyfriend anymore but didn’t know how to tell her. When Kim finally got up the courage to break up with him, he was relieved. Kim’s fears about her and Stivre not being friends anymore after they broke up were assuaged when he sat with the group at lunch and everything was “better than normal.”
Sometimes, that’s the hard thing about a breakup—that you still like the person as a friend but don’t want to date them anymore. For Kim and Stivre, it worked out because they both felt the same way about their relationship. It can be harder if you feel on way and the person you’re dating feels differently.
