Shevea and Kim
Shevea and Kim are the opposite of Vee’s group. Allisen can tell the difference right away. When she first meets Shevea, Shevea’s choice of reading material indicates both that she has a similar taste in books to Allisen, and that she shares Allisen’s religious beliefs. While similar taste in books and shared religious beliefs do not automatically indicate that someone is going to become your friend, it at least gives you something to talk about right off the bat.
Upon meeting Kim for the first time, Allisen likes her immediately because of her friendly, enthusiastic personality. Sometimes it happens that way—you meet someone and you just click. Allisen, Shevea, and Kim, although all very different from each other in regard to personality and hobbies, become and remain friends with each other because they enjoy being around each other. Kim and Shevea do not make Allisen feel uncomfortable the way Vee’s group did. They are kind to Nalcie, they get along with Jack, and they enjoy some of the same things Allisen enjoys (such as trick-or-treating).
Kim, Shevea, and Allisen are a great example of people who are different from each other, but still best friends. Kim is outgoing and loves to be the center of attention. She enjoys acting, singing, and dancing, and will talk to anyone she meets. She likes cute clothes, jewelry, and things that sparkle. Allisen, on the other hand, isn’t so much into the clothing and jewelry scene, and prefers reading and writing to performing. Allisen likes Littlest Pet Shop and playing outside, and doesn’t mind talking to people she doesn’t know—but she doesn’t actively seek them out either. Shevea, in contrast to both of the others, is quiet and reserved. She has a hard time talking to people who she doesn’t know very well. She worries about what people think of her. However, once you get to know her, you find that she is a very sweet and kind girl. Shevea enjoys reading and doing all kinds of art.
In Book #15, “Giving Thanks For Thanksgiving”, Shevea is worried about what Allisen and Kim will think of her when they find out that she’s poor and used to eat at the soup kitchen. She tries to hide the truth from them, but they find out anyway. Shevea is surprised and relieved to find out that Allisen and Kim don’t care how much money she has; they like her because of her personality.
Throughout Allisen’s seventh-grade year, she becomes closer and closer to both Kim and Shevea, and the three of them end up making all kinds of memories together. In Book #18, “Happy Hearts”, Kim develops a major crush on Stivre, and Allisen and Shevea totally don’t get it. But they’re happy for her anyway when she and Stivre get together, because they know it’s something Kim really wanted. In Book #21, “A Time of Change”, Kim and Shevea both help Allisen come to terms with the fact that her family is moving, and in Book #22, “New To Get Used To”, Allisen and Kim help Shevea feel more comfortable with the fact that her mom is giving her more independence.
Kim, Shevea, and Allisen are all wonderful friends to each other. They are loyal, they are caring, and they support one another. If your friends are like them, your friends are keepers.
