Providence

Lyrics:

That’s twice now
It’s worked out so perfectly
Somehow
It is a mystery
But what are the chances?
What are the odds?
I’m not one for gambling
But I bet it was God
Who made everything happen and work out just so
So nobody would doubt, and everyone would know

That it could not have been an accident
There’s no way it was coincidence
It wasn’t random or haphazard or just by chance
It’s providence
God’s providence

Sometimes
Lord, it amazes me
What You do
To get us to see
That You always listen
And You always care
We don’t always notice it
But You’re always there
To make everything happen and work out just so
So nobody will doubt, and everyone will know

That it could not have been an accident
There’s no way it was coincidence
It wasn’t random or haphazard or just by chance
It’s providence
God’s providence
And it could not have been just happenstance
Can’t we all just use our common sense
It wasn’t random or haphazard or just by chance
It’s providence
God’s providence

When a patient wakes up after the doctor says it’s hopeless
When a fender bender saves you from the truck you didn’t notice
You go out for a walk, and find the pet you’ve been missing
Job search, stranger tells you ‘bout the perfect position
Yeah, we all attribute it to right place, right time
Good luck, good skills, but we don’t thank the Mastermind
He’s the one who’s got a plan, we’re the ones who are in His hands
So let’s give Him praise for the way He tweaks the circumstance

It could not have been an accident
There’s no way it was coincidence
It wasn’t random or haphazard or just by chance
It’s providence
God’s providence
And it could not have been just happenstance
Can't we all just use our common sense
It wasn’t random or haphazard or just by chance
It’s providence
God’s providence

The Story Behind The Song:

In May 2013, my cat Christmas went missing overnight. I was worried about him, and kept praying that we would find him soon and that he’d be okay. The next day, my friend came over and invited me to walk her dog with her. As we walked by a sewer grate on the side of the road, we heard a soft meow, and realized my cat was stuck in the sewer! We were able to get him out and bring him safely home.

I do not believe it was a coincidence that my friend came over at that time to invite me on a walk, and that my cat meowed right as we were walking by. I believe that it was an answer to my prayers. I wrote the first verse and chorus of “Providence” that day.

Several years later, in January 2016, my cousin was on life support in the hospital. Nobody thought she would make it… but she did. That’s when I wrote the rest of the song.
So many times, we chalk miraculous things up to “a cool coincidence” or “a happy accident.”  We fail to give credit where credit is due. There have been so many times in my life that amazing, miraculous things have happened, and I know that they are not just random—they are the work of a loving, caring God.

I created the music for this song in 2021. I started at the beginning and built it up from there. When I got to the third verse, I realized that the tune I’d always had for that part no longer worked, due to the way I’d structured the music. I re-wrote the third verse, drawing from the original lyrics, but structuring it into a faster-paced rap. A few of the lyrics from the third verse (both the original and the new rap version) were directly drawn from my life.
