Now
Lyrics:
You don’t need to say her name You don’t need to make a sound I can tell she’s on your mind When the silence getting loud But this just started now Maybe we still have a chance Maybe we can work it out I push back all my doubts ‘Cause we can fix this now, now, now I look to the sky and see the light And say “You know, we’re just like the stars” They shine through the night, we’re in a tough time but it Won’t last for long You don’t wanna wear a ring But you wanna stick around I’m starting to realize Maybe some things just don’t work out I’m so conflicted now Holding hands when we go out We’re performing for the crowds But this thing is crashing down It’s down Yeah I look to the sky, I’m wondering why we’re even Continuing this charade at all It used to be moonlight, kiss me at midnight but Everything has turned around I don’t wanna miss your laugh You don’t wanna miss my smile We don’t wanna disappoint But we’ve been stagnant for a while And we’re both tired now Think it’s time to make a change Can’t see us reciting vows Time for moving on is now, now, now Briefly hesitate Was it all a waste? We invested so much time into each other It’s what our friends say But I don’t see it that way We both learned a lot, know what we want now in the future You don’t have to feel ashamed When you’re sitting on her couch ‘Cause we used to have a flame But the oxygen ran out That story’s over now Just a quick respectful nod When I see you ‘round the town Both in better places now, now, now |

Lyrics, melody, and music by Kelsey Gallant Produced by Kelsey Gallant at Blobfish Studios Lyric video by Segdesign The Story Behind The Song:
I was just messing around on my piano one night when I came up with the repeating pattern that plays throughout most of the song. I thought it sounded cool, so I recorded it, came up with the rest of the piano music, and created a sketch vocal track (mostly humming with a few lyrics). If you listen to my original sketch track, it sounds very similar to the actual song. I wrote the lyrics that night as well, after I'd assembled the piano track. My sketch track had included some lyrics such as "you don't need to say her name" and "when the silence getting loud." I used those lyrics to come up with a premise for the song. When I write songs, I generally try to steer away from generic love and breakup songs, because I like to focus on more unique, nuanced topics. What I like about "Now" is that it's a song that describes the deterioration of a relationship that ends in an amicable breakup. Most breakup songs are either sad, angry, vengeful, or "ha-ha, I'm moving on 'cause I'm so much better than you." By contrast, the characters in "Now" both come to the mutual conclusion that their relationship isn't working out, and decide that they'd be better off each moving on separately. Fun fact: I'm really not sure which parts of this song are the verses and which are the choruses. The "I look to the sky" parts sound like choruses, but there are only two of them, while there are four of the other parts, so the structure is kind of confusing!
