Out of My League

Lyrics:

She sat at a distance, her eyes on the crowd
Saw him at the center, joking around
She was book-smart and quiet, nerdy and shy
He was the school’s most popular guy

She knew he was friendly to whoever he met
He’d carried her books once, she’d never forget
But he was so social, and she was so not
She shook her head, turned away, and thought:

“He’s out of my league
He’ll never like me
‘Cause he’s so popular and cool and all I do is study
I’ve talked to him twice
Man, he’s really nice
But he’s got a thousand friends already
I go unnoticed, I drift invisibly
He would never in a million years be attracted to me.”

Well, he went to the library and peered through the shelves
She had her nose in a book and was all by herself
She was top of the class, she had it all made
He was the guy who’d repeated a grade

She looked up and saw him, his heart started to pound
He mumbled her name and stared at the ground
Heat rushed to his face, and he bolted off
Chastising himself as he thought:

“She’s out of my league
She’ll never like me
‘Cause she’s so smart and motivated and I’m just a dummy
Talked to her three times
Got ‘em each memorized
But there’s no way I’m anything in her eyes
I’ve got a hundred girls pining after me, but not she
She would never in a million years be attracted to me.”

She stared after him in a daze
She couldn't believe he'd remembered her name
She couldn't believe he'd reacted that way
And that interaction made her want to be brave

He heard footsteps, he turned and he stared
She'd followed him, she was standing right there
She looked excited, determined, and hopeful, yet scared
And at that exact moment he realized she cared

They shared a shy smile
Their faces were red
But they both had wide grins as they said,

"Thought you were out of my league
Thought you'd never like me
So I hid how I felt, I didn’t want you to see
I only saw my flaws
I never saw what you saw
But you were a star in my eyes all along
If we’d both kept hiding I never would have believed
That somehow you were always attracted to me

I still find it amazing to learn that you always liked me
When all this time I thought you were out of my league”

The Story Behind The Song:

I came up with the idea for this song after a conversation I had with my mom. We were talking about a guy I used to have a crush on, who had been one of the most popular kids in my school. This guy was very nice and friendly, and had actually talked with me several times, but I knew he would never be interested in me in a romantic way, since I was just a quiet, studious, blend-into-the-background-type girl. My mom pointed out that that was the way I saw myself, but not necessarily the way others saw me. She said that maybe that boy had liked me as much as I'd liked him, but had been intimidated by my high GPA or the fact that I'd skipped two grades.

While I didn't think that was the case with the boy in question, the conversation certainly got me thinking. Two people could like each other for a very long time, and never speak up about it, all because they assumed the other one would never be interested in them. That's what sparked the idea for this song!

A year after I wrote the song, I wrote a novella based on it. Click on the image below to learn more about it!
