Mariana and Ryan
“I don’t get it. What’s the attraction of sleeping? If you sleep all the time, you miss amazing stuff like this.” I gesture out toward the sunrise. The sun is peeking up over the ocean now, casting its orange glow on everything.
“You have a point,” he says, staring out at the beauty of it. “This is pretty amazing.” |
The friendship between Mariana and Ryan is a fun one, built on shared experiences and mutual attraction. However, despite the fact that they always have a great time when they’re together, their friendship is actually somewhat shallow. For six whole weeks, Mariana doesn’t tell Ryan the truth about herself, fearing that he won’t be interested in her if he finds out. Ryan tries to tell Mariana personal things about himself, but she is impatient and doesn’t really take the time to listen.
Are Mariana and Ryan still friends? Of course. It’s possible to be friends with someone and never discuss deep personal matters. Friendship is first and foremost about enjoying each other’s company, genuinely liking each other as people. But there’s a different between a casual friend and a close friend, and oftentimes close friendships involve more than just shared good times. |
