Lyrics:
“Come, oh come” He gathered his friends to His side That night To eat with them for the last time In this life And he gave out the bread and the wine They knew this night felt different somehow As they watched him break the bread And they didn’t understand it But they listened as He said, “This is the closing hour Everything is finished now The light will be gone for a while But that doesn’t mean it’s never coming back out This is the darkest moment It seems that hope is gone for good this time This is the closing hour But you won’t have to wait forever for the light to once again shine” Pain, oh pain It poured from his body straight down To the ground As his friends wept and mourned all around They cried out, “There is no miracle to be found” But with the nails through both His hands A crown of thorns upon his head He looked around at all of them And in a steady voice He said, “This is the closing hour Everything is finished now The light will be gone for a while But that doesn’t mean it’s never coming back out This is the darkest moment It seems that hope is gone for good this time This is the closing hour But you won’t have to wait forever for the light to once again shine” So when there's pain and loss on earth Let this remind us what we're worth When we feel our world caving in And death and sadness want to win When the end is drawing near And hopelessness is all we feel Let us remember why He died To offer us eternal life This is the closing hour Everything is finished now The light will be gone for a while But that doesn’t mean it’s never coming back out This is the darkest moment It seems that hope is gone for good this time This is the closing hour But you won’t have to wait forever for the light to once again shine No, you won’t have to wait forever for the light to once again shine |
The Story Behind The Song:
I came up with the premise of this song, and a few lines from it, on or around Good Friday of 2013. I always really liked the idea, and I knew I wanted to convey the story of Jesus' last days on earth--the first verse focusing on the Last Supper, the second verse focusing on His death, and the third verse tying it all in to our lives today. But I had a hard time actually coming up with the lyrics. Over the next four years, every time Holy Week rolled around, I'd usually come up with a few more lines or ideas for the song. Often I'd write them after going to a Good Friday or Maundy Thursday church service. I think one of those years I made an attempt to finish the song, but didn't like what I came up with. Finally, on Maundy Thursday of 2017, I filled in all the remaining gaps and finished the lyrics. The lyrics had always had a tune, but it wasn't until 2020 that I started coming up with music to go with the song. I played around on the piano until I found something I liked, and went from there. And, in keeping with tradition, I released this song on Maundy Thursday, 2020. |
