Lyrics:
Boy, you look hot but I hesitate Know I’m flawed, but if you’re a façade, I know I’ll break One foot on the gas, one foot on the brake My past is my baggage, it was stopped at the gate No more, afraid of your approach You seem nice, but do you want something more? Looking for the subtle clues, but all I see is you And you’re cute You seem well-intended, and I don’t want you to be offended, ‘cause You could be my future But all of my friends, they turned out to be users Can’t tell, that’s poor judgment, not sure if I’m ready And would you even want me Why would you even want me? Not really sure, ‘cause I’ve been hurt before Any time I thought I loved someone he was out the door Can’t take no more, no time to explore Yeah, I’mma protect myself from all the hurt Maybe there could be something in a different world But I don’t want to be used like I’ve always been before You seem well-intended, and I don’t want you to be offended, ‘cause You could be my future But all of my friends, they turned out to be users Can’t tell, that’s poor judgment, not sure if I’m ready And would you even want me Why would you even want me? I can’t let my scars own the day You might be who I need You’re telling me you’re always gonna stay Can I convince my heart to finally believe? You seem well-intended, and I don’t want you to be offended, ‘cause You could be my future But all of my friends, they turned out to be users Can’t tell, that’s poor judgment, not sure if I’m ready And would you even want me Why would you even want me? Would you even want me Why would you even want me? Would you even want me How could you even want me? One foot on the gas, one foot on the brake My past is my baggage, it was stopped at the gate |
The Story Behind The Song:
In 2016, my brother Cam wrote a song called "I Swear I'll Stay." It was a synth-pop song, with rap verses in which a guy expressed his insecurities over getting into a relationship with a girl, and a powerfully sung chorus in which the girl convinced him she would always be there for him. The intention was for Cam to do the rap and me to sing the chorus. We made several attempts at recording it, but we were having a hard time achieving the particular sound we wanted. Neither of us was pleased with the way we sounded in the song, so Cam suggested that we try using the same lyrics to create an entirely different song. He handed me the lyric sheet, put me in front of the microphone, and told me to sing the song to a new tune. I started singing, and what I came up with on the spot was pretty close to what ended up being the first verse and chorus of "Would You Want Me." Cam came up with new music to fit the tune and style of the new song. The first verse through the chorus is mostly the same as the original rap first verse, with a few lines chopped out or condensed. The second verse is a very watered-down version of the original rap second verse. I wrote the third verse separately, incorporating sentiments from the original song (the original song's chorus started with "Don't let the scars own your day"). The original song had a lot more lyrics than this one has. In addition to the lines from the rap portion that were cut out, the entire chorus, bridge, and third verse of the original song did not make it into "Would You Want Me."
