The Death of a Pet
Not even a month after Tomas died, Allisen had to deal with another death—that of her cat, Sniffer. The death of a pet may not have the same impact on the wider community as the death of a human does, but for the people who knew and loved that pet, it can still be incredibly hard.
Sniffer had always been part of Allisen’s life. He slept in her crib when she was a baby, and stayed close by her side as she grew up. He was her best friend long before she had any human best friends. He was always there for her.
Allisen knew he was getting older, and weaker, and sicker. He stopped being able to climb up on her bed. He stopped being able to control his bladder. He stopped eating. Even though Allisen knew the end was coming, she still found it hard to say goodbye. She begged God for more time, to heal Sniffer and let him live longer. But it was Sniffer’s time to go.
It was hard for Allisen to adjust to this new reality of Sniffer no longer being with her, but she accepted the fact that he had lived a good long life and was now no longer in pain. She had loved him and spent time with him while he was still here, and she had no regrets. The sadness remained, but so did the good memories of the times she’d spent with Sniffer.
It’s okay to cry when your pet dies. It’s okay to feel sad and heartbroken. Hold on to the memories. You’ll always miss them, but the intensity of the sadness will fade over time. And your pet will always be with you in your heart.
