Love Triangle #1: Ellie, Rushton, and Kim
It didn’t take very long for Ellie and Rushton to become great friends with one another. And it didn’t take very long after that for it to become obvious that their feelings for each other went beyond friendship.
But there were complications. Kim was also pretty obvious about liking Rushton, and Ellie didn’t want to mess anything up by going out with him. Ellie was afraid that if she and Rushton became a couple, Kim would be upset, and it would change the dynamics of the whole group.
That’s a tough situation to be in—when you like the same person your friend likes. It’s especially tough when that person starts showing interest in you. It feels like having to choose between your friend and your crush—which is made even more complicated when you’re also friends with your crush!
In this case, it turned out fine. Kim recognized that Rushton was into Ellie, and was able to be happy for them even while being a little sad for herself. She didn’t let it ruin her friendship with either of them. I think that’s the thing that’s important to keep in mind, especially while you’re in high school. You’re still young. Things change all the time. Maybe it won’t work out between your friend and your crush. Maybe you’ll meet someone new who you like even more than you like your current crush. Maybe you’ll come to realize that you actually like your friend and your crush as a couple. I know it really hurts when the person you really like falls for your friend instead of you, but it’s not worth ruining a friendship over.
Now, if you’re the person your crush falls for (assuming he is also your friend’s crush), that can be a bit more challenging, because you really like him but don’t want to hurt your friend’s feelings. In this case, the best thing to do is to talk about it with your friend, and assess what is most important to you. Think everything over carefully before you come to a decision.
