Ends Like...
Lyrics
First time that we ever talked, took All I had not to run away My breath caught and my heart was pounding And I didn’t know what to say I feel safe with a fiction story, happy ending locked in for me But real outcomes are unpredictable And now we’re standing close You and me, and we’re all alone So much suspense in this first page ‘Cause it starts like I’m lookin’ forward to seeing where this goes Seems all right But I don’t know what this next chapter holds In real life The hero doesn’t always get the girl It starts so nice as the romance grows But it ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t-- Time passed and we formed a friendship Heart-to-hearts and coffee dates Bad jokes at the Chinese restaurant They kicked us out ‘cause we stayed too late And that night when you leaned in toward me, I saw futures spread before me But I turned away ‘cause I was scared to fall If we were archetypes You would’ve pulled me tight But that’s just not the real-world way ‘Cause it starts like I’m lookin’ forward to seeing where this goes Seems all right But I don’t know what this next chapter holds In real life The hero doesn’t always get the girl It starts so nice as the romance grows But it ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t know I don’t know, I don’t know It’s so much easier in prose Or on screen, where you know They kiss and the credits roll, hold On just a minute, it’s my favorite scene until I find myself in it I’m mesmerized and terrified to see my feelings in your eyes and ohhhhh Ends like I don’t know Starts like I’m lookin’ forward to seeing where this goes Seems all right But I don’t know what this next chapter holds In real life The hero doesn’t always get the girl It starts so nice as the romance grows But it ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t know Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ends like I don’t know |

Lyrics by Kelsey Gallant (2020-2022) Melody by Kelsey Gallant and Cam Gallant (2020-2022) Produced by Kelsey Gallant and Cam Gallant at Blobfish Studios The Story Behind The Song:
This song is totally about me. Not really about me and any particular guy, but just me in general. In books, movies, and TV shows, I love first kisses and moments where the characters finally reveal their feelings for each other. But when I think about that being me... eeeeeeeeek! My brotherCam assembled the music track for this song in summer 2020. I came up with a few different "sketch tracks" for it, creating possible melodies that could be sung over the music. I wasn't really crazy about any of them at first, but Cam took one of my sketch tracks and did some chopping and editing with it, creating the "eh, eh, eh, eh, eh" part you hear today, which we thought sounded cool. It still took me a long time to write the lyrics. I thought the vocal chops in that part kind of sounded like they said "ends like I don't know" (even though they actually didn't say anything), so from those lyrics I built the premise of feeling tentative about starting a relationship because unlike in a romance book or chick flick, you don't know how it's going to turn out. For a while all I had was the first verse, and because I loved it so much, it was hard to come up with lyrics that I liked just as much for the rest! It also took me a while to come up both the lyrics and melody of the chorus. I experimented with many different chorus ideas before Cam came up with the tune you hear today, and I came up with lyrics I liked for it. I wrote the chorus and second verse all in one night and was SO excited! From the very beginning, the bridge was supposed to be pitch-shifted, Juicy J-style rap. Cam came up with a tune/rhythm, and I wrote some lyrics, and we tried to make it work. But we didn't end up liking it, so I totally re-wrote that part, and it came out so much better! I really enjoyed writing this song and incorporating literary references. I drew from my own feelings and experiences for some of the lines, and others I just wrote what sounded good. I think the authenticity is what I like so much about this song. Oftentimes my songs are just stories about made-up people, but this one genuinely captures my own insecurities, so even though the specific story is still made-up, I'm singing from my own perspective. |
