what is an arc?

ARC stands for Advance Reader Copy. Advance Reader Copies come out before the book is officially released (they are still the same book, in completed form, but may contain slight differences in text or formatting from the published version).  The purpose of distributing ARCs is to increase publicity for the book. If someone reads an ARC of a novel and really enjoys it, they might recommend the book to their friends, who may choose to buy it when it comes out. Advance readers are also encouraged to post reviews of the book on Amazon.com and other websites. The more reviews a book has, the more likely it is to show up in a Web search.

It can be cool for readers to possess a copy of a book from before the book was officially out!
