What It FEels Like Inside
|
Lyrics:
Your smile, your openness Your spirit, your friendliness It all adds up, but I don’t know how You are so much more real than anyone else You say it’s Jesus, who set your heart free I want to believe it, but it sounds far-fetched to me But there’s still that peace, that light in your eyes That makes me almost reach out I wonder what it feels like inside I wonder how things look through your eyes You carry ‘round a smile so wide It looks like you’re touching the sky Did you ever feel like you could fly Did it ever catch you by surprise I’m not sure I’m gonna change my mind But I wonder what it feels like inside I’m a skeptic, I’m a tester I don’t believe in anything I can not see There’s no way to know, what the real truth is Other people have already tried to convince me I’ve heard that theory about God a million times I still don’t know if it is wrong or if it’s right But coming from you, it seemed so much more true I can tell He’s your passion, His love is in you I wonder what it feels like inside I wonder how things look through your eyes You carry ‘round a smile so wide It looks like you’re touching the sky Did you ever feel like you could fly Did it ever catch you by surprise I’m not sure I’m gonna change my mind But I wonder what it feels like inside To have your faith totally guiding your life To have someone that you can turn to at any time The joy I see in you, you tell me it’s just a reflection That God is perfection I can see Him shining from you Maybe I’ll take that chance Maybe I’ll run to God I can’t stop wondering I wonder what it feels like inside I wonder how things look through your eyes You carry ‘round a smile so wide It looks like you’re touching the sky Did you ever feel like you could fly Did it ever catch you by surprise This time I’m gonna change my mind I want that love, I want that joy So this is what it feels like inside This is how things look through your eyes I’m carrying a smile so wide I feel like I’m touching the sky Is this really how you feel all the time I can’t believe how everything seems so right I’m so glad that I changed my mind ‘Cause it’s better than I ever imagined it would feel inside Feel inside It’s better than I ever imagined it would feel inside |

This is an old one! The funny thing is, this song originated with me just waiting in the hallway outside one of my college classrooms. Someone walking by said to their friend, "I wonder what it feels like inside," referring to the temperature inside the classroom. A tune came to mind for those words, and soon afterwards I also had lyrics and a tune for the next line, "I wonder how things look through your eyes." I didn't know what I wanted the song to be about, but I was thinking that maybe the protagonist could be wondering what it's like to be a Christian or what it's like to have a certain disease. I had just those two lines for a while, but eventually went with the "what it's like to be a Christian" plotline and came up with the rest of the chorus. Much later, I wrote all the verses. I've always liked to create imaginary people inside my head, and I based this song on the story of some people I'd already made up (a young woman who met a guy who she was interested in romantically, but whose faith also intrigued her). I have dozens of completed lyrics, some with tunes and some without, just hanging around on my computer waiting until I someday decide to produce them. I didn't have any specific plans to produce this one until I realized that my Stories album was seeming... well... pretty bleak and depressing. I wanted to add two more songs to it to help break up the sadness. They needed to be story songs told in a first-person perspective, so I combed my archives and decided that this one and "Wide-Eyed Innocent Little Girl" would be perfect! My brother Cam envisioned 2009-era, maybe Colbie Caillat - style instrumentation for the song, and I liked that since that's what I would've been listening to when I first wrote it. We commissioned one of our go-to freelancers, Merci, and he nailed it! As soon as I heard his music, I started envisioning a music video for this song, and I'm looking forward to hopefully releasing that sometime this fall! "What It Feels Like Inside" is on my debut album, STORIES. Click on the picture to learn more about the inspiration behind the album, and the other songs it contains!
