Thank You For My Friends

Lyrics:

Thank You for the friend I met in third grade
We’ve stayed in touch for over twenty years
Lived 2000 miles apart for almost all of them
But still shared each other’s joys and tears

Thank You for the friends from homeschool group
Sleepovers with a lot of laughs
And my college friends, in the study room
Getting ice cream after class

Every friend You’ve given me
Has brought so much joy, sweet memories
And they came along at just the right time
Brought new perspectives to my life
Whether goofing off or sharing feelings
You always knew exactly what I needed
And I know I’ll be grateful to the end
Lord, Thank You for my friends

Thank You for my friends from church
It felt so good when I found my tribe
Board games, outings, heart-to-hearts
Volleyball in the park and late nights

Thank You for giving me best friends
Shopping and talking and days on the beach
And thank You for my team when I traveled to Belize
We grew so close, was so hard to leave

Every friend You’ve given me
Has brought so much joy, sweet memories
And they came along at just the right time
Brought new perspectives to my life
Whether goofing off or sharing feelings
You always knew exactly what I needed
And I know I’ll be grateful to the end
Lord, Thank You for my friends

Younger friends who I watched grow up
Older friends who mentored me through hard times
Friends from work, and family friends
Friends who just briefly passed through my life
For those I’ve lost touch with, I wish you the best
And if I’m ever in your area I’d love to reconnect
Love my old friends, love my new friends, future friends I haven’t met
They all came from You Lord, I’m so blessed

Thank You for the friends who felt like family from the start
The ones with whom I’ve never been afraid to share my heart
And for my brothers, who’ve always been the greatest friends to me
And Jesus, thanks for being the friend who never leaves

Every friend You’ve given me
Has brought so much joy, sweet memories
And they came along at just the right time
Brought new perspectives to my life
Whether goofing off or sharing feelings
You always knew exactly what I needed
And I know I’ll be grateful to the end
Thank You for my friends

Lord, Thank You for my friends
Oh, Thank You for my friends

The Story Behind The Song:

All throughout my life, God has blessed me with amazing friends. My first best friend was my cousin Stephanie, who I always looked forward to seeing at family events. I remember being good friends with a girl from the homeschool group I was part of around age six, and then when I attended a Christian school for third and fourth grade, I became very close with some of my classmates--one of whom is still one of my best friends today!

We moved to a new state when I was ten, and I had a lot of fun playing with the kids in the neighborhood. Throughout my teenage years, I enjoyed chatting with nice people in my high school classes, laughing with my choir friends at church, and having sleepovers with my friends from the new homeschool group I was part of. Then I started college, and became part of a fun group of people who always hung out together in one of the library study rooms. We were intentional about staying in touch after we graduated, and regularly got together to go bowling or share a meal.

In my twenties, I discovered that there was such a thing as church young adult groups, where I could meet and hang out with other Christians around my age! I was overwhelmed with joy at the close friendships I formed once I started getting to know people from the two young adult groups I participated in. Then I took a 3-month mission trip to Belize, and became like family with the 8 other people on my team. I ended up moving to Ohio the following year and living just five minutes away from one of them--and now not only is her sister my sister-in-law, but their entire family is like family to me as well!

I've often reflected on how grateful I am to God for all the friends He's placed in my life over the years, and for the specific timing of each one. I decided I wanted to write a song thanking God for my friends, and referencing specific relationships. I also thought it would be really fun to have some of my friends sing the song with me. I remember starting to type out the lyrics on my phone during a trip visiting my brother in Texas. I think I came up with everything but the chorus then. I had planned that I would create the instrumentation, maybe with the help of one of my friends who plays guitar, but then I came across an instrumental track by the creator Billionstars (Octavio Suarez) and started singing my lyrics to it. They fit! I came up with a tune for the chorus that would go with the music, and then filled in the lyrics.

It was super fun recording this song with my friends. None of them had any prior recording experience, but they told me that they enjoyed getting to try it out and see how the process works. I was able to record in-person at separate times with my friends Lika, Neel, Ruth Anna, Jael, and Vickie, and I had them each record the chorus and a line or two from the song that related to my friendship with them. My friend Meredith sent her recordings from San Antonio, and I was so happy to be able to include her in the song even though I hadn't gotten the opportunity to record with her!
