The Story Behind The Song:
This song came together when my brother Cam and I were improvising. Cam came up with a piano riff that he liked, and added some effects and digital drums to it. I sang/hummed along to it, opening with the lines, "Come along now, time to wake up / Watching you put on your makeup." We both loved the sound of what we'd created, so we kept working with it. My improvised chorus had contained the line, "Thirteen, don't know what it's about." Cam and I both liked that line a lot, so I kind of started from there to write the first verse and chorus. For a long time, that's all we had. Cam wrote a tentative second verse at one point in time, but it took the song in a completely different direction than what I'd originally been planning (more of a body image song than an "advice to your younger self" song). So although we both liked the song and wanted to produce it someday, we were at a standstill for a bit. When we decided to turn my Stories EP into an album, "Slow Down" was one of the songs we thought of to include on it. We commissioned Martin Deco to build the music, using Cam's initial demo music as a starting point. I took some of Cam's body image lyrics and incorporated them into the second verse, and our sister-in-law Ruth Anna helped us fill in a few words as well. Initially, I was going to write a more detailed bridge/third verse, but I didn't have time before we sent the demo to Martin, and...well, my demo bridge ended up becoming the final bridge!
