You're Not The Only One
Lyrics:
You’re feeling alone You think you're the only one who goes through so much pain You don't know There are a million people out there feeling the same way You think the world's against you and you're running out of hope You think that life is nothing more than a cruel prevailing joke And that no one understands you But let me tell you You’re not the only one who’s ever felt that way You’re not the only one who finds life hard to face You’re not the only one whose heart’s too scarred to break So just hold on, and it will all be okay Pretending you’re fine ‘Cause you think it isn’t possible they’d understand your pain They don’t share your life But I can guarantee you some of them are thinking the same thing You can’t see a sunlit future so you want to just give up You’ve come to think that you’re the one that nobody could love And that no one understands you But I know the truth You’re not the only one who’s ever felt that way You’re not the only one who finds life hard to face You’re not the only one whose heart’s too scarred to break So just hold on, and it will all be okay If everyone else’s life is perfect Tell me why are there songs about heartache and loss Why are there people who speak for a cause You’re not the only one And if other people can get through it If they can climb from the ashes and come out on top Tell me why do you think you will never rise up You can and you will You’re not the only one who’s ever felt that way You’re not the only one who finds life hard to face You’re not the only one whose heart’s too scarred to break So just hold on You’re not the only one who’s ever felt that way You’re not the only one who finds life hard to face You’re not the only one whose heart’s too scarred to break So just hold on, and it will all be okay Hold on, and it will all be okay Just hold on You're feeling alone But you're not the only one who's ever felt that way |

Lyrics and Melody by Kelsey Gallant (2013-2014) Music by Merci (2024) Mixed by Cam Gallant Lyric video by Kelsey Gallant The Story Behind The Song:
I came up with the chorus in 2013, after talking with a younger friend of mine who was in middle school at the time. She was telling me how the other kids at her school didn't know the real her and didn't understand what she was going through. It sounded like she was feeling all alone, thinking that she was the only one going through these struggles and that everyone else's life was perfect. I wanted to write a song to remind her and other people that everyone has struggles, and that other people will understand because they're going through things too. A few months later, I was chatting with a girl on YouTube who was going through some incredibly hard things and having suicidal thoughts. I was trying to convince her to not give up on life, because no matter how bad things are right now, they can get better. The lines "you can't see a sunlit future so you just want to give up / you've come to think that you're the one that nobody could love" were inspired by her, as was the bridge. I wanted to encourage her that other people who've experienced extremely difficult things have made it through and are doing fine, so she can too. When I first started producing my songs, this was one of the first ones I thought of, because it's an upbeat tune with lyrics that are meant to help people. My brother Cam Gallant sat down at the piano and tried to come up with music for it... resulting in the music for our song "Gold"! It took a few more years before I came back to this song and decided to hire the talented freelancer Merci to develop instrumentation for it. For reference songs, I gave him some songs by Britt Nicole, one of my favorite singers and songwriting influences from the 2011-2012 era. He nailed her bouncy "teen girl pop" vibe! Cam Gallant helps me out a lot with mixing and mastering stuff, and on this song in particular, he did just about ALL the work with regards to vocal chain, harmony direction, and volume balances.
