The Sacrifice
Lyrics:
It’s in our name, we’ve undertaken To rid our lives of every sin Surrender all to Jesus dear, devoid of fear But instead we struggle to fit Him in We say we’ll do whatever’s right We claim that evil isn’t part of our lives But we lose our footing A desperate struggle To get back up the mountainside ‘Cause it’s so easy to get lost in nothing It’s so easy to mindlessly lose your mind It’s so easy, it’s just so easy It’s so easy to ignore the sacrifice A world that pulls into the darkness The media promotes the sin We’re told to live as strangers here, in reverent fear But instead we’re struggling to fit in Reversal of priorities Remember faith is based on what you can’t see Minor slip-ups lead to treachery So stand firm and live what you believe ‘Cause it’s so easy to get lost in nothing It’s so easy to mindlessly lose your life It’s so easy, it’s just so easy It’s so easy to ignore the sacrifice Remember this as you go along No excuses for doing what you know is wrong In the love of our Father is where you belong Trust in Him in your weakness, He will make you strong It was for us that Jesus died So we could have eternal life But the world makes it hard sometimes So be on your guard against all the lies ‘Cause it’s so easy to get lost in nothing It’s so easy to mindlessly lose your mind It’s so easy, it’s just so easy It’s so easy to ignore the sacrifice It’s so easy to get lost in nothing It’s so easy to mindlessly lose our lives It’s so easy, it’s just so easy It’s so easy to ignore the sacrifice The sacrifice The sacrifice It’s so easy, it’s just so easy It’s so easy to ignore the sacrifice |

I started writing this song one day in college. My school was having a special prayer service that students could attend if they wanted. I had planned to go to it, but then my friends invited me to join them for lunch. I decided to go to lunch with them instead of going to the prayer service, and I felt kind of bad about it. As we walked to the cafeteria, I was thinking about how I was kind of letting myself get lost in the flow. I was thinking about how easy it is to choose other things over God, even if we call ourselves Christians and aim to do what pleases Him, and how this can start to happen without us even realizing it. I wrote up through the second verse that day after lunch. I finished the lyrics a few months later, when my family visited Las Vegas. A lot of the billboards I saw there were advertising blatantly sinful things, and it made me sad to think that this is the culture we live in. I wanted this song to be a firm reminder to myself and other Christians to not let ourselves get led astray by the sinful things we're surrounded by. When I decided to make this EP, I searched through my lyrics folder for songs that I thought were impactful. I decided this one packed a punch, so I found the talented Dimitri Benhamou (Dimi) on Fiverr and hired him to make the instrumentation. Although rock isn't my usual style, I had always envisioned this as a rock song, along the lines of Avril Lavigne and Orianthi. Dimi did an amazing job bringing my vision to life! This song was super hard for me to sing. The high parts are a bit out of my range, and I've always done better with quiet singing than "powerhouse" type vocals. At one point I was looking for someone else to sing the chorus for me, and I met with a woman named Crystal Martin, who laid down a few tracks. I ended up being able to sing the chorus myself after a lot of takes, but I incorporated Crystal's vocals together with mine for some extra texture. My friend Ruth Anna helped me come up with a few adlibs toward the end, and then my brother Cam Gallant helped me significantly with the mixing side of things! album cover photo credit: Vickie Statler
