little blue dress

Lyrics:

One day I met a girl in a little blue dress
Pretty eyes, but her hair was a mess and
She said, “Pretend that you’re a monster”
I laughed, but ran ahead and caught her

Uh uh, and I didn’t know it at the time, uh uh
Nature was a haven in her life, uh huh
Free from the piles and the grime, uh huh
Memories stacked so high, uh huh
Rooms full of outgrown clothes, uh huh
And everything they ever owned, oh oh
Oh oh, they never let go

You and I would play every day outside
Running through the fields for a long, long time
Rolling down the hills and picking wildflowers
Oh, where all the butterflies fly around
Oh oh, you flourished in the wildness
Oh oh, but then came the sunset
You cried, you didn’t want to go home
I tried to walk with you home
You told me to leave you alone

I made friends with the girl in the little blue dress
Loved to laugh and her games were the best, and
She said, “Let’s be superheroes”
I said yes, but didn’t want her too close

Uh uh, wondered why she never took a bath, uh huh
She said, “Cause that’s full of plastic bags” uh huh
I nodded but I didn’t understand, uh huh
Didn’t wanna hold your hand, uh huh
Why can’t I go to your house, oh oh
Why do they keep people out, oh oh
Oh oh, they never let go

You and I would play every day outside
Running through the fields for a long, long time
Rolling down the hills and picking wildflowers
Oh, where all the butterflies fly around
Oh oh, you flourished in the wildness
Oh oh, but then came the sunset
You cried, you didn’t want to go home
One day I walked with you home
You warned me to leave things alone

Oh oh
Curtains pressed flat to the windows
Boxes to the lights casting shadows
Toys and books in her bed
Dandruff, nine lives of fur shed
Coffee mugs leaving stains on the floor
Crumbs crushed into the carpet
Sheets piled to the door

You and I would play every day outside
Running through the fields for a long, long time
Rolling down the hills and picking wildflowers
Oh, where all the butterflies fly around
Oh oh, you flourished in the wildness
Oh oh, but then came the sunset
You cried, you didn’t want to go home
I walked with you back home
But didn’t want to leave you alone

One day I met a girl in a little blue dress
Pretty eyes, but her hair was a mess and
She said, “Pretend that you’re a monster”
I laughed, but ran ahead and caught her

One day I met a girl in a little blue dress
Little girl in a little blue dress
You cried, you didn’t want to go home
How do I help you
How do you even know

The Story Behind The Song:

My brother Cam and I enjoy listening to licensed instrumental tracks on sites such as soundee.com and billionstarsprod.com. On these sites, musicians who love creating can sell ready-made tracks to people like Cam and me, who are more talented in the area of lyric writing than musical production.

We found a cool track by Joe Gautrey, and started singing/humming along to it, making up bits and pieces of lyrics but more so a tune. Cam first started singing in a country-type voice, "I fell in love with a girl in a little blue dress," but didn't get much farther than that. Then he said I should take a turn. I modified the line to "One day I met a girl in a little blue dress, and continued, interspersing various lyrics to indicate that her hair was a mess, she was running from something, and that there was something the protagonist didn't know at the time. I didn't really have a premise for the song, but I was starting to form the idea that the protagonist had met a little girl who had a secret--something wasn't right with her home life.

Cam liked what I'd come up with. He assembled some vocal effects to go with it, and came up with the idea that the girl in the little blue dress could be from a family of hoarders. Part of this idea came from a line I sang that sounded like, "How do you live in this mess?" which didn't end up making it into the final song.

I loved Cam's idea, so I started filling in some of the lyrics based on that premise. The lyrics were actually pretty difficult to write, so I asked Cam for help, and together we filled in the rest of the lyrics over the next few months.

Sonically, this song is super interesting, because in some parts we layered my voice in the center and Cam's panned to the right and left, and in other parts we had his voice in the center and mine in the right and left. I'm really happy with how it came out!
