Breakthrough
|
Lyrics:
He told me I was everything I thought he was the moon and the stars in the sky Hit me with a diamond ring Months later walked away, leaving me high and dry And every single night My tears wouldn’t subside My heart was shattered in a billion pieces on the floor And I started to doubt, everything that seemed secure Hit my knees and I prayed for a breakthrough “God, I’m hurt and I don’t really trust You But I’m waiting to see if You’ll come through Make something good from this bad news My life’s a mess and upside down Can I be okay, will it turn around How can I ever feel safe now, oh oh oh” I’d never known anxiety But all the sudden every little thing freaked me out I walked around expecting grief Wondering what else was gonna come crashing down But every single time I screamed up to the sky You showed me there could still be happy endings When panic tried to choke You gave reasons to hope Oh oh oh oh Hit my knees and I prayed for a breakthrough “God, it’s hard but I’m learning to trust You I’m starting to see how You come through Make something good from the refuse My mind’s a mess and upside down Stay with me please, till it turns around I want to trust, but I still doubt, oh oh oh And all the Answered prayers astound Miracles that got my head spinning around Can I believe in this hope that I’ve found Yeah yeah yeah Hit my knees and I prayed for a breakthrough “God, it’s hard but I’m starting to trust You I’m still scared but I know that You’ll come through Oh oh oh Hit my knees as I’m praying for breakthroughs “God, life’s hard but I know I can trust You Love to see all the ways that You come through Make something good, keep my faith renewed When my life’s a mess and upside down I’ll pray and wait till it turns around Knowing You’re in control, I feel safe now And all the Answered prayers abound Miracles that got my head spinning around Your comfort, and this hope that I’ve found Yeah yeah yeah |

Of all the songs on Stories, this one hits the closest to being about me. No, I never experienced the pain of a broken engagement, but I did experience anxiety, trust issues, and God's persistent faithfulness, particularly throughout 2024. In 2023, my parents got divorced. I'd grown up my entire life thinking that they didn't believe in divorce, so to me, it felt like something stable had been removed from under my feet. 2024 was a great year for me. I remember having so much fun with my brothers and my friends, making all kinds of fun, crazy memories. And yet, I also remember crying at the smallest trigger, and having my whole stomach become a jiggly mess any time it seemed like there was a possibility of something going wrong. I'd lost trust--not in people, but in situations. Deep down, I believed that any situation that seemed stable could come crashing down at any moment. I remember long walks on which I'd cry out to God about whatever I was worrying about, begging Him to let everything work out okay. And I have countless memories of being surprised, relieved, and overjoyed at how quickly He did work things out. He showed me over and over and over that even if I couldn't trust a situation, I could always trust Him. In January 2025, my brother Cam and I were browsing licensable music tracks by producer billionstars, and I found one called "Trust." I think I had been wanting to write a song about my trust issues and God's provision, so when I improvised lyrics while singing to the track, I had some of those thoughts in mind. I loved the improvised track I came up with! A few days later, I used my improvised lyrics and my own experiences as a starting point to write the final lyrics. "Breakthrough" is on my debut album, STORIES. Click on the picture to learn more about the inspiration behind the album, and the other songs it contains!
